Golden Blood - 4

  1. GOLDEN BLOOD 4 - A black ink and gray pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size vellum paper. It appears in the book, "GOLDEN BLOOD" by Jack Williamson, published by Tamerlane Press in 1978.

There are times when an author provides little in the way of details and the illustrator is challenged to create almost everything he puts in a picture. But sometimes an author writes with a clarity that shows vividly what you are reading about, and in this case I chose to draw a desert warrior astride a camel that was clearly described in the book.

The notes I made on the related manuscript page were; "headpiece covers face," "wears chained mail," "raised shield," "decorated axe," "sun blazing through swirling sands," "can't see the desert floor".

The notes made composing the scene easy, the creative part came when I had to design the stuff the warrior is sitting on and draped over the camel. And when I checked the manuscript again I saw that I had underlined other words that even described them! I didn't have to work hard on this picture at all.
